The League of American Bicyclists promotes bicycling for fun, fitness and transportation and works through advocacy and education for a bicycle-friendly America. The League represents the interests of the nation`s 42 million cyclists. With a current membership of 300,000 affiliated cyclists, including 40,000 individuals and 600 affiliated organizations, the League works to bring better bicycling to your community.

The League recently honored 13 communities with its prestigious Bicycle Friendly Community designation. The communities have been recognized for their longstanding commitment to providing safe accommodation and facilities for bicyclists, and for their efforts to encourage bicycle travel for transportation and recreation. Portland, OR received the gold-level designation; Folsom, CA was granted the silver-level award; and 11 communities around the nation shared the bronze-level honor. They join 14 communities given the designation in May, 2003.

If you care about bicycling, become a League member today.

Support Pennsylvania Rails To Trails

Northwestern Pennsylvania plays host to some of the most scenic and fascinating rail trails in the country. To our North lies the Oil Heritage Region, which boasts such magnificent facilities as the Allegheny River, Samual Justus, and Sandy Creek trails. As well as developed trails like Lake Wilhem, and Oil Creek.

To our South is the awesome Allegheny Highlands trail, which is projected to tie in to Maryland and Washington, DC on a route that will encompass some 300 miles. And to our West lies dozens of Amish roads laden with shops and bed and breakfasts aimed at cyclists. To our East is the exciting Butler/Freeport trail system. And all within an hours drive of Lawrence county

The growing popularity of outdoor recreation activities, such as cycling, inline skating, walking and running, combined with the loss of community open space, has increased the need for quality recreational facilities such as rail-trails.

Rail-trails provide places for cyclists, hikers, walkers, runners, inline skaters, cross-country skiiers and physically challenged individuals to exercise and experience the many natural and cultural wonders of the nation's urban, suburban and rural environments. Rail-trails not only serve as independent community amenities, they also enhance existing recreational resources by linking neighborhoods and schools to parks, waterfronts, recreational centers and other facilities.

There is no doubt about the strong link between exercise and good health. By providing a place for so many types of recreational use, rail-trails can greatly help to improve public health.
